To honor World Hunger Day, the 22nd Foothills Empty Bowls Lunch and Art Auction will take place on Friday October 15 at Harold’s Cave Creek Corral. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the profits will be donated Foothills Food Bank and Resource Center.
The auction began on the Food Bank’s website on September 7 and will end on October 15. Individuals can still bid on art and also purchase bowls created and donated by members and friends of the Sonoran Arts League, sponsor of the Empty Bowls project.
“We are delighted to initially offer the online art auction so people can support this important cause and spend time bidding on their favorite artwork,” said Carole Perry, founder of the event.
“This empty bowl art auction tapped into the generous minds of dozens of renowned artists in the Sonoran Arts League,” added Perry. “We have already received many pieces, ranging from painting to sculpture in all media. Many artists have donated two or more pieces out of a selfless desire to ensure the Foothills Food Bank has the resources it needs to help our neighbors in need.
New this year: wooden turned bowls
“Members of Arizona Woodturners Association are delighted to be a part of the Empty Bowls project and to support the Foothills Food Bank, ”said Brian Lensink, president of the Arizona Woodturners Association. “It is a difficult time for the Arizonans who are in need of food support and we are happy to help them. We love to turn bowls using wood that comes from the urban forest that makes up the greater Phoenix area. Having these bowls for a good cause makes our pleasure even greater. We also challenged our members by offering prizes to those who can make the most balls. Wood is a great material for bowls and will be added to the line of items made by artists using other mediums.
Bowls purchased in advance can be selected at the Empty Bowls lunch or guests can choose to pay for their bowls at the event. A pasta lunch, hosted by Harold’s, will be served in the bowls and guests can keep the bowls as a memento of empty bowls around the world, throughout the year.
