The British Ambassador to Morocco, Simon Martin, stressed on Wednesday in Rabat that Morocco is a “world leader” in its action against climate change, according to the Hespress website.
As part of a visit by the British Prime Minister’s special envoy for trade to Morocco, commemorating 100 days since COP26 was held in Glasgow, Dr Andrew Murrison, Martin said that the progress made by Morocco in the transition to renewable energy are “at the global level.
The British ambassador stressed the importance of this ambition continuing, adding that Morocco is “one of the few countries that has been able to establish a nationally defined contribution to reduce emissions within the required limits” . This “puts Morocco well ahead”, he added, explaining that Morocco enjoys flexibility because it has an economy that is not dependent on hydrocarbons. “Morocco is increasingly seen as a powerful economy because it is not dependent on hydrocarbons.”
Martin further noted that there is bilateral work through the Energy Transition Council, based in Glasgow. This aims to “bring together the collaborations and funds necessary to help Morocco continue its energy transition”. The British Ambassador highlighted the role played by the private sector, emphasizing the importance of encouraging private sector investment in both countries in green investment projects.
